- Make a list of what you are storing. This will enable you to organize enough packing supplies and remind you of what you have in storage.
- Wrap mirrors and pictures with bubble-wrap/blankets/paper. Never store mirror items flat.
- Seal boxes tightly with packing tape to prevent dust from entering, stuffing open areas with plain newspaper to prevent damage and collapse when stacked. Label all boxes for future reference.
- Wrap furniture with bubble wrap, furniture covers or pads to prevent scratching.
- Cover furniture with dust cover to prevent dust from collecting.
- Cover all items with a large plastic cover to prevent dust and/or moisture from collecting.
- Mattresses should be covered properly and stored on flat level surfaces.
- Place frequently needed items toward the front of the unit; less frequently needed items and valuables should be placed toward the rear of the unit.
- Use available space inside drawers and larger appliances such as stoves and refrigerators to store small items such as towels, linens, toys, pots and pans, etc.
- Make sure ovens are clean before storing. Make sure fridges and freezers are defrosted and dried before storage. Drain all water from washers before storing.
- Use shelving to organize your items and fully utilize the height of your storage unit.
- Do not store combustible paints, chemicals, etc.
- Periodically inspect unit to ensure all items are remaining properly stacked.
- Break down items (such as table legs) and store large furniture on end to save space.
- Trashcans can be used to store shovels, hoes, rakes, etc.
- If at all possible, visit a storage facility and ask to see the actual unit you would be renting; check for puddles or leaks–most facilities are not responsible for water damage to your goods.
Unit Sizes
Not sure how much space you need? The information below is intended as a general guide to help you visualize how much space your items will require.- 5x5 will hold several boxes. Similar to a small closet
- 5x10 will hold boxes and other items. Similar to a walk-in closet
- 10x10 will hold one to two rooms of furniture, ect.
- 10x15 approximately the size of a one car garage. This size will hold 3-4 rooms of furniture and boxes
- 10x20 approximately the size of a larger one car garage. Will accomodate about 5 rooms of furniture and boxes.
- 10x30 approximately the size of a two car garage. Will normally hold an entire household of items.
